One of the major Key West attractions is the Dry Tortugas National Park. It is made up of seven small Islands and the waters between them. Located at a distance of about 70 miles from Key West, tourists can reach the park via boats or small seaplanes. Some of the features of the Dry Tortugas National Park are listed below:

  • The islands get its name ‘Dry Tortugas’ from the numerous turtles living in the region. Travelers can catch sights of different species of turtles such as hawksbill, leatherback, green, and loggerhead sea turtles.
  • The park is world famous for the picturesque surroundings, the pristine waters, the plentiful varieties of birds, and the stunning coral reefs. The historically important Fort Jefferson is situated on the Garden Key Island.
  • It is important for tourists to check out the prevailing weather conditions as well as the forecast before making the trip from Key West to the Dry Tortugas National Park. A sunny day is the best time to visit the island and enjoy its diverse excursions
  • There are no services or amenities of any kind on the Garden Key Island. Hence all tourists must ensure that they carry plenty of water, snacks, hiking gear, and other essential items when visiting the island. It is also important for hikers to take all their equipment back with them when the tour is over. Nothing should be left behind.
  • Fort Jefferson was primarily built to safeguard the profitable sea route. However, with the advent of technologically advanced means of warfare, the fort soon became redundant. Tourists can go for a walk across the different sections of the fort. The friendly guides who accompany the tourists will offer interesting and interactive narration about the history of the region and the fort.
  • The waters around the Dry Tortugas are full of dangerous reefs which pose several threats to ships passing through. Hence, a lighthouse was constructed on the island so as to guide the ships and ensure their safe passage.
  • Adventure seekers will be thrilled to go on snorkeling and scuba diving expeditions to the coral reefs. During sunny days the water is very clear which increases the underwater visibility. Tourists can rent the snorkeling or diving gear at Key West and come to the island. In addition to the colorful corals, divers will get to check out different species of colorful fishes as well as an eclectic marine life.
